Project Overview

The Product: IFU (instructions for use)

The Problem: The instructions for the medication administration were living in a word document format. The client needed the information translated into a visual IFU that complies with FDA guidelines. The client needed help visualizing the instructions and formatting them in a way that would be easy for the user to read, understand, and successfully administer.

Team: UX designer, UX researchers, medical team

Responsibilities: Develop visual layouts of text instructions providing design solutions that are clear and easy to follow.

Designs

I started my design process by sourcing inspiration. I searched online for existing Instructions For Use for any product, not limiting my search to only medical instructions. Gathering different examples helped me sketch layouts and compositions for my own designs.

IFU A
IFU A is the stakeholder preferred version, however there is hesitancy around the amount of information presented and reading required for the users. It was important to include this as an option for testing as it is the clients preferred level of content and detail.

IFU B
IFU A and B are the same page dimensions. IFU B is meant to be more of a “quick tips” with less text but still enough direction for the medication to be administered successfully. Based on prior projects, we have learned users typically like to see less text. We decided to provide this “quick tips” version to test and see if it contains enough information and direction for users to successfully administer the medication.

I developed two IFU concepts in Adobe InDesign. I used my visual skills to create layouts, organize the information into different containers, add visual ques (bolding, numbering, bullet points, icons), implemented text hierarchy, illustrations and color. I ensured that the content was displayed in a clear step-by-step instructional hierarchy with appropriate headings. I delivered two visual solutions for complex, critical information.

Next Steps

Next steps are to conduct research sessions with users that meet our participant criteria. We will test the IFUs with real users and asses how they perform. We will identify which IFU performs better and which IFU is preferred. We will then iterate on both IFUs incorporating feedback we observed during our sessions.
